Alex and I headed to West Harlem recently for dinner at Lolo’s Seafood Shack. It’s a cute, little island-inspired restaurant that I discovered through Pulsd, and I’m so glad I found it.
My favorite part of the restaurant was all the colorful, Caribbean-themed decor that reminded me of casual seaside eateries in Jamaica. They actually describe themselves as “Caribbean meets Cape Cod,” but either way, it’s nice to get away without leaving the city.
And speaking of casual, Lolo’s isn’t fancy by any means. The menu is approachable with lots of snackable, eat-with-your-hand items that are mostly under $20, and everything comes in paper bowls. Our voucher included a crab dip appetizer, plantain chips with pineapple salsa, a smelt fish and fries basket, and some delicious broiled shrimp, all served with a choice of beer or rose.
Watch our vlog below to see the food and find out what we thought.
If you’ve tried Groupon or Pulsd deals before, you know they are hit and miss, but this wasn’t too bad. For $35, we both had more than enough and had a nice evening out. My only complaint is that I’d have preferred some variety in the selections that came with the voucher — our meal was a little repetitive with all the fried stuff. But the full menu has more options, and I’d revisit to try their take on the avocado toast, as well as items like crab legs, jerk ribs and conch fritters.
I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention the great service at Lolo’s. From the moment we stepped inside, everyone was smiling, upbeat and attentive, which unfortunately can be a rarity in NYC.
